About the Hip Slip Leash

Thinking backwards

Dogs pull on leads, some more than others.

And when this happens, who is leading who?

This isn’t a rhetorical question! We really think it’s strange that people hook up halti, chokers, and harnesses to their dogs, when in fact they really want control of their hind quarters!

The Hip Slip Leash is exactly that, a strategic retreat to the rear end of your dog! As the name “hip” slip implies!

The Hip Slip leash enables you take the power out of your dogs pulling power by giving you control over it’s hind quarters (where much of the puling comes from!), and with a short sharp pull of the leash, you apply pressure to the nerves around your dogs lower waist that make it uncomfortable for your dog to keep pulling – in time, often immediately, your dog learns that when the Hip Slip Leash is on pulling is no fun anymore, and importantly it also knows that you don’t want it to pull!

Harnesses can have the opposite impact, and they can actually train your dog to pull more, because pulling becomes a fun game. Also, a choker chain can be cruel and if applied with too much force can cause permananet damage to your dog’s throat. Finally, halti’s and slip leads require so much time and are hard to get right that often people simply give up – we certainly did!

How to train your dog with it

Once the leash is connected to your dog and when the dog starts pulling give the Hip Slip Leash a short sharp pull and apply your word of choice: “no”, “stop”, “woah!” - we like “woah” because it feels like you’re in a cowboy movie!

Then when your dog has stopped pulling so hard, or at all (your call), say “let’s go”, “yes”, or “good dog”, etc: and then carry on walking. Repeat as necessary and use as much force as you need to. Let’s be clear here, some dogs will need more force applied than others. But don’t worry, unlike a choker chain, your dog can’t become injured.

A bit about the product and where it comes from

We had two German Short Hair Pointers who pulled like mad and nothing worked.

This was problematic because where we lived — in the far north of New Zealand, where there are literally more dogs than people! —there were native, rare kiwi birds everywhere on the sides of the roads. So, if our dogs pulled at one and attacked it (they’re bird hunting dogs after all!) we would have been killing a rare species of native bird iconic in New Zealand and also would’ve been up for huge fines and potential imprisonment! Needles to say, we really needed a solution for our dogs!

So, inspired by kiwi-aversion dog trainers in the rugged bush-clad hills of the far north of New Zealand (who like to think backwards!) the Hip-Slip Dog Leash is a complete dog control-cum-training system —it's more than just a leash.
Plus, it’s made from robust mountain climbing grade rope that is both UV and moisture resistant. It will easily handle a walk in the park or a multi-day hike or hunt in the hills.

The indestructible marine grade stainless steel guide-ring will handle the hardest pulling dogs and all-weather conditions, including saltwater! And also, the intentionally designed forefinger/thumb-loop-handle enables high-sensitivity and rapid-response dog training. But finally, the quick-clip 360-degree swivel snap hook is for fast and easy attachment to any type of dog collar.

We make these to order in New Zealand, they’re made with care, and we’re proud of each one we send out!
